Another player of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Ahmed Musa, has announced his retirement from international football.

Ahmed Musa has officially ended his international career with the Super Eagles, closing the curtain on a distinguished journey that spanned nearly 15 years and included Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

The former Leicester City forward confirmed his decision on Wednesday, describing his time with the national team as a source of immense pride. In a heartfelt message, Musa said representing Nigeria was an honour from his very first call-up, stressing that wearing the green and white jersey gave his career deeper meaning.

He expressed gratitude to fans, teammates, coaches and football administrators who supported him throughout his international journey, noting that he steps away from the Super Eagles with peace, appreciation and confidence in the team’s future. Musa also reaffirmed his lasting bond with the national side, declaring that once a player becomes an Eagle, that connection never truly ends.

Fondly nicknamed “The Governor,” Musa retires as Nigeria’s most capped men’s international player, having made 111 appearances. He is also the country’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, with four goals to his name. Two of those came against Argentina at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a feat he repeated four years later by scoring twice in Nigeria’s 2–0 win over Iceland at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

At club level, Musa began his professional career with Kano Pillars before moving to Europe, where he featured for CSKA Moscow, VVV Venlo, and later Turkish sides Karagümrük and Sivasspor. He also enjoyed a successful spell with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, winning the league title with the club.

The 33-year-old returned to Kano Pillars in September 2024 and was later appointed the club’s general manager. His decision to retire from international football follows closely after the exit of defender William Troost-Ekong from the Super Eagles setup, marking another changing chapter for the national team.
