Aryna Sabalenka continued her brilliant 2026 season at the Madrid Open, moving into the fourth round after a strong straight-sets victory over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian. The world No. 1 showed control from the start, winning 6-1, 6-4 and extending her impressive season record to 25-1.

Sabalenka looked comfortable on clay, even after dominating the early part of the year on hard courts. Her confidence has carried smoothly into Madrid, especially after winning both Indian Wells and Miami earlier in the season. Her only defeat so far in 2026 came at the Australian Open final, where she lost to Elena Rybakina.

Cristian had a chance to make the match more difficult in the second set when she created four break-point opportunities that could have given her a 4-2 lead. But Sabalenka stayed calm under pressure, saved every one of them, and later broke Cristian at 4-4 to take full control of the match.

The victory now sets up a fourth-round clash between Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka. Osaka booked her own place in the next round with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win over Anhelina Kalinina. She attacked Kalinina’s serve throughout the match, winning a large share of return points and breaking serve six times.

Sabalenka and Osaka have met twice before, with both players winning one match each. Their next meeting in Madrid is expected to be one of the biggest matchups of the round, especially with both players arriving in strong form.

Elsewhere in Madrid, Ann Li produced one of the biggest surprises of the day against Iga Swiatek. Li was leading 7-6, 2-6, 3-0 before Swiatek retired due to illness. Although the match ended in unfortunate fashion, Li said she was proud of the way she competed and pushed through a difficult contest.

Mirra Andreeva also advanced with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Dalma Galfi. The Russian has been excellent on clay this season and improved to 9-1 on the surface in 2026. She controlled the match by putting constant pressure on Galfi’s serve and winning more than half of her return points.

Other winners included Hayley Baptiste, who defeated Jasmine Paolini, while Belinda Bencic edged Diana Shnaider in straight sets. Anna Bondar also progressed, and Leylah Fernandez battled past Iva Jovic in three sets to secure her place in the fourth round, where she will face Ann Li.
