Leonardo Bonucci has urged the Italy national team to appoint Pep Guardiola as part of a “radical change” following continued struggles on the international stage.
The former defender believes the Manchester City manager is best placed to modernise the national side after a third consecutive failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Call for structural overhaul
Italy’s recent decline has raised concerns about the direction of the national team, despite their triumph at UEFA Euro 2020.
Bonucci stressed that deeper systemic issues must be addressed, particularly in defence, which was once a defining strength of Italian football.
“The important thing is to rebuild Italian football from the ground up, starting with the defence,” he said. “We must have the courage to face the situation head-on in order to regain the respect of the entire world.”
Guardiola seen as catalyst for change
Bonucci identified Guardiola’s tactical approach and track record of developing young players as key reasons behind his endorsement.
“There are very talented young players; we must give them time to develop and progress,” he said.
“Time is the only miracle solution, and if radical change is desired, Pep is the man for the job. It’s difficult, but dreaming is free.”

Italy are currently navigating a rebuilding phase, with a new generation expected to take on greater responsibility.
Bonucci emphasised the need for patience from both supporters and the football federation as the team seeks to re-establish itself among the global elite.
Regardless of future managerial decisions, Italy will miss this summer’s World Cup, extending a difficult period for one of international football’s most successful nations.
