Nigerian fitness entrepreneur Bunmi George, widely known as Jbums, has shared how her husband took a salary job at her company for 11 months after losing his job as a pilot, describing the challenging period as a defining chapter that ultimately strengthened their marriage.

Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, the Shredder Gang founder revealed that her husband immediately took the lead in restructuring their household economy once his aviation career was put on hold, focusing on proactive financial discipline rather than despair.

According to George, her husband’s immediate reaction to his job loss was to conduct a thorough review of the family’s financial commitments. He insisted on immediate lifestyle adjustments to protect their long-term stability, despite her initial hesitation.

“He had a meeting with me and said, ‘We have to cut down our expenses. First of all, we had two cars, and he said one had to go,” she recalled.

“I told him, ‘I’m still making money now. I’m still working.’ But he said, ‘There’s only one income, so everything must be cut down.’”

She said beyond downsizing their vehicles, he recommended reducing the number of domestic staff. She emphasized that her husband did not merely dictate these changes but actively led by example, taking on a significant share of household chores, including cooking and cleaning, to keep the home running smoothly.

Jbums said on several occasions, her husband even stepped in to personally handle customer orders when logistics required it.

“One of the things that blows people’s minds is that he actually came to work for my company. He used to come to the office, and he was earning a salary,” she said

“Sometimes he would have to go and do deliveries. Some people actually got deliveries from my husband personally. They didn’t know he was doing delivery work.”

She further stated that as she became the primary breadwinner, she made a conscious effort to ensure her husband felt valued and respected as the leader of their home.

“I believe my husband is a leader, and leadership is not about how much money you make,” she explained

“I had to be extra careful. Not because he had an issue with working for me, but I wanted to make sure that I still honoured him during that time.”

“My husband was out of a job for 11 months, and he worked at my company and earned a salary. He told me we had to cut down our expenses, like selling one out of the 2 cars, and reducing our domestic staffs”

“After that conversation, he took up some responsibilities around the… pic.twitter.com/qrSxJxgytc— Just Eniola 💜 (@JustEniola01) July 13, 2026
