Chelsea have deleted a social media post featuring midfielder Enzo Fernández following a backlash from supporters during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.

The Premier League club had shared a post celebrating Fernández while he was representing Argentina in the World Cup, but it was removed after drawing criticism from fans, many of whom viewed its timing as insensitive given England’s 2-1 loss in the semi-final.

The deleted post came amid heightened tensions surrounding the match, which was further overshadowed by controversy after several Argentina players celebrated with a banner asserting the country’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

Chelsea have not publicly commented on the decision to remove the post. Fernández, who played a key role in Argentina’s victory over England, remains one of Chelsea’s most prominent players and is expected to feature in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.

The incident sparked widespread debate on social media, with some supporters arguing that clubs should avoid posting celebratory content involving players representing countries competing against England during major international tournaments, while others defended the club’s recognition of its player on international duty.
