Erik ten Hag has admitted he has been left surprised by Bayer Leverkusen’s decision to fire him.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties on Monday, after taking charge of just two Bundesliga fixtures.

Ten Hag was only employed by the former German champions on July 1.

In total, Ten Hag was in the role for only games – a German Cup win over minnows SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach, a 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim and a dramatic 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen.

““The decision by Bayer Leverkusen’s management this morning to put me on a leave of absence came as a complete surprise,” he said.

“To part ways with a coach after just two league matches is unprecedented.”

Ten Hag also blamed the sales of key players for their poor start to the campaign.

He accused Leverkusen of not giving him enough time to implement his ideas with the squad.
