A young woman has triggered widespread reactions online after breaking down in tears following the dismissal of her sexual assault case in court, a ruling that has reignited debate over how gender-based violence cases are handled in Nigeria.

A young woman has broken down in tears after a Nigerian court dismissed her sexual assault case against a man she accused of raping and threatening both her and her friend.

In an emotional account shared on social media, the woman described a deeply frustrating four-month ordeal of moving back and forth between police stations and the courtroom, only to have the case thrown out without what she felt was a fair hearing.

She alleged that neither she nor her friend were given the opportunity to fully present their accounts in court, and that key pieces of evidence including a knife recovered from the accused’s home, chat records, and a medical report submitted by the victims were either ignored or not presented by the prosecution.

The court reportedly ruled that there was no case to answer, citing the absence of evidence of penetration as a determining factor in its decision.

The woman’s tearful reaction has resonated deeply online, reigniting conversations about the failures of Nigeria’s justice system in handling sexual and gender-based violence cases.

Many Nigerians have expressed outrage over what they describe as a pattern of dismissing rape allegations, with critics pointing to inadequate handling of evidence, lack of support for survivors, and systemic barriers that make it difficult for victims to get justice.

Her closing words “there is no law in Nigeria” have since become a focal point of the broader discussion.

“We got to court, they didn’t let us narrate what happened. They dismissed every evidence and said there was no case. All the statement myself and my friend wrote were ignored. Even with the kn!fe retrieved from his house and the chat evidences provided, they still ruled ‘no… https://t.co/Ak1vWLhjpi pic.twitter.com/39hYHBGgRt
