Tension is rising in northern Nigeria after armed attackers launched a shocking assault on security operatives in broad daylight, leaving fear and uncertainty across border communities.

Two Nigerian Customs Service officers have been killed following a confrontation with suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi State, according to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi.

Adeniyi made the announcement on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, while speaking at a biennial international conference hosted by the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Ilorin.

He disclosed that the attack took place in broad daylight when armed assailants stormed two security checkpoints in the Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The two officers who lost their lives were identified as Assistant Superintendent of Customs Bamigboye and Deputy Superintendent of Customs Dom.

Adeniyi described their deaths as deeply painful, while emphasizing the critical and often dangerous role that Customs operatives play on the frontlines of Nigeria’s security operations, working alongside the military.

He stressed that beyond the armed forces, the Nigeria Customs Service serves as one of the last lines of defense in many vulnerable border communities across the country.

Despite the tragedy, the Customs chief vowed that the killings would not dampen the determination of the service to keep confronting criminal and terrorist networks operating along Nigeria’s borders, pledging that the sacrifice of the fallen officers would not be in vain.
