The Edo State Commissioner for Information has asked residents to be patient with the government over bad roads, saying major repairs will happen during the dry season.
The commissioner said trying to fix roads in the rainy season wastes materials and public money.
He said this on Tuesday at the ministry’s monthly press briefing in Benin.
The commissioner blamed much of the road decay on poor quality work done by the previous government under  Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Several roads fixed during that time have already fallen apart even though they were completed just a few years ago.
He said the current government under Governor Monday Okpebholo is aware of its responsibility to tackle the state’s problems, both old and new.
He said if the previous government had done solid, lasting roads, the state would not be complaining now.
Many roads in Benin were repaired under the past government but are now in bad shape.
The commissioner also criticised supporters of the former governor who have been attacking the present administration on social media over the state of roads.
He said the government assessed roads in areas like GRA, Iyekogba Estate, Irihrih and Okoroma and found they were full of holes and falling apart despite being fixed under the previous administration.
He said the level of decay shows that those roads were built for quick results, not lasting quality.
Roads are supposed to last a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 30 years.
He said no building expert would try to fix holes and bad roads during heavy rain.
He asked residents to give the current administration more time, saying the government is still committed to making roads across the state passable.
