Egypt’s preparations for their decisive World Cup clash against Iran have been disrupted after local security authorities denied the team’s request to remain in Seattle following their historic victory over New Zealand.
The Pharaohs had hoped to travel directly to Seattle after Sunday’s 3-1 win in Vancouver, a result that strengthened their chances of reaching the World Cup knockout stage.
Instead, the squad was instructed to return to its training base in Spokane, Washington.
The unexpected change comes as Egypt look to build on their impressive start to Group G, having collected four points from their opening two matches.
Hassan confirms travel setback
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan confirmed the development in a statement released by the Egyptian Football Association.
The security authorities refused the team’s request to stay in the city of Seattle as planned after the New Zealand match in the World Cup, and therefore the team’s delegation will return to the city of Spokane,” Hassan said.
“The team had wanted to travel directly to Seattle to spare the players travel fatigue due to the numerous journeys in preparation for the Iran match on June 26, but following the security decision, the Egypt national team delegation will return to Spokane.”
The decision means additional travel for the Egyptian squad ahead of a crucial encounter that could determine their progression to the round of 32.
Historic win boosts qualification hopes
Despite the logistical setback, confidence remains high in the Egyptian camp following their comeback victory over New Zealand.
After falling behind to an early goal from Finn Surman, Egypt responded through Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Zico and Trezeguet to secure a landmark victory.
The result ended a 92-year wait for Egypt’s first World Cup win and moved them to the top of Group G with four points, following their opening draw against Belgium.
Salah, who scored his first goal of the tournament, was among the players celebrating after the match as Egypt edged closer to a place in the knockout rounds.
The North Africans now turn their attention to Iran, knowing that another positive result could secure qualification and continue one of the tournament’s most compelling stories.
