Enzo Fernandez received a mixed reception from Chelsea supporters as he returned to action in the club’s final pre-season match against Real Sociedad.
The Argentina international was introduced for Reece James in the 61st minute, with sections of the Stamford Bridge crowd responding with loud boos.
Other supporters, however, cheered Fernandez and sang his name, creating a divided atmosphere whenever the midfielder touched the ball.
Fernandez faces uncertain Chelsea future
Fernandez took over the captain’s armband from James after coming onto the pitch, despite uncertainty surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester City have reportedly expressed interest in the 25-year-old, with Chelsea understood to be demanding £120 million to consider his departure.
City were reportedly given a Friday deadline to make an offer, although Chelsea now expect Fernandez to remain at the club for the coming season.
The midfielder has not received a formal bid during the summer despite the club making its conditions for a potential sale clear to Fernandez and his representative, Javier Pastore, in May.
Fernandez has previously fuelled speculation about his future, including criticism of Chelsea while on international duty with Argentina in March.
He was also linked with Real Madrid, although the Spanish club later stated that they were not pursuing a deal.
Alonso backs midfielder to stay
Fernandez returned to Chelsea training this week after an extended break following the World Cup.
New manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that he wants the midfielder to remain part of his plans and reportedly contacted Fernandez soon after taking charge to discuss his role in the squad.
Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is now among those interested in bringing Fernandez to Manchester City, but Chelsea’s valuation remains a significant obstacle.
