Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso has confirmed that defender Reece James will be played in midfield in their match against Arsenal on Sunday.

In the past few seasons, the 26-year-old has occasionally been positioned in the central area, although he primarily plays as a right-back.

However, early signs suggest that Alonso intends to frequently implement a 3-4-3 formation this season, with James serving as one of the two central midfielders.

James’ physical attributes and leadership skills may prove beneficial on Sunday afternoon when Chelsea visit the Emirates Stadium to face Premier League champions Arsenal.

When asked if his captain has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the world, Alonso responded, “I would say so. He appears very comfortable and confident in that role,” he said.

The Spaniard further told the press, “He has the intelligence required to excel there. He understands how to connect with his teammates in the midfield and knows the optimal actions to take before and after receiving the ball. His awareness is commendable.

“I recall witnessing him perform exceptionally well in that position. Therefore, we are indeed utilising him. He will accumulate significant playing time as a primary midfielder.

“I was aware of his capability to play there. I remember his performance in the last Club World Cup final in New York, where he partnered with Moi in the midfield.

“At Anfield, I believe he played there last year. This is not unfamiliar territory for him; I am not uncovering anything new.

“I think it aligns with the team’s requirements and his position within the squad. I recall the match against Fulham from last month. His influence, both emotionally and in terms of captaincy and leadership in the midfield, is significant; he is involved in all aspects and can fulfill a crucial role.

“In my opinion, he is physically fit and ready. He has been actively competing in the Premier League, so that is not a concern for me.

“He is already aware of his positioning. He possesses the ability to assist his teammates, which is very important to me, as he brings a strong presence.

“He commands respect from his teammates; when he speaks, they listen and follow his lead.”

James may be joined in the midfield at the Emirates by Moises Caicedo, although the Ecuadorian will undergo a late fitness assessment.

Caicedo left the match with an unspecified injury towards the end of Chelsea’s exhilarating 4-3 victory over Brighton last weekend, having also missed the previous two matches due to an issue.
