Former Spain midfielder, Xabi Alonso, is waiting in the wings to replace Arne Slot as Liverpool manager at the end of this season, BILD reports.
The Reds have put up a poor defence of their Premier League title, which Slot won in his first season by 10 points.
They are currently in fifth place, 21 points off league leaders Arsenal and this leaves the Dutchman’s future untenable beyond the summer.
It is understood the club’s hierarchy are reluctant to make any changes now, as they are competing on two fronts.
Liverpool faces Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Alonso was fired at Real Madrid earlier this year, but senior officials at Anfield want their former midfielder to be the man to lead a summer overhaul.
