Nigerian music superstar Davido has opened up about a challenging period in his career following his record deal with Sony Music in 2016.
The Afrobeats star recalled that the period was particularly difficult for him, noting that things did not go as planned after he released an EP that failed to achieve the success he expected.
According to Davido, the disappointing performance of the project affected him emotionally, prompting him to pray for divine intervention as he struggled with sadness.
He revealed that things eventually changed when fellow Nigerian singer Tekno sent him the song ‘IF’, which went on to become a major hit and helped him regain his confidence and momentum.
Davido shared his experience, saying:
“I signed to Sony in 2016, and it was a very bad period for me. Everything was messed up. I dropped an EP that didn’t do well, and I wasn’t happy. I told God to come through for me because I was getting sad. Then Tekno sent me ‘IF,’ and I bounced back.”
The singer’s revelation highlights the difficult phase he experienced before the release of ‘IF’, a song that became one of the defining records of his career.
Released in 2017, ‘IF’ marked a significant turning point for Davido, enjoying widespread popularity and further strengthening his position in the Nigerian music industry.
