The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a father and son for unlawful possession of four firearms.
The spokesman for the command, DSP Musa Mohammed, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 said the suspects, Tibi Friday, 68, and Futoro Gbene, 36, were arrested during a routine stop and search exercise along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway, Yenagoa.
According to the PPRO, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were all travelling to Rivers State, when a search was conducted on the tricycle leading to the recovery of four single-barrel guns.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command under the leadership of CP. Iyamah Daniel Edebor, psc, IICFIP, foosi, has recorded another significant operational breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects in possession of four (4) single-barrel guns,” the statement read.
“On 6th July 2026, at about 1030 hours, operatives attached to the Anti-Vice Unit, while conducting a routine stop and search operation along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway, Yenagoa, intercepted a tricycle conveying two suspects: Tibi Friday, ‘m’, 68 years, of Futoro Gbene Community, Ekeremor Local Government Area, and his son, Oyabrade Tibi, ‘m’, 36 years old.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were allegedly travelling to Abua, Rivers State, when a search was conducted on the tricycle.
“During the search, four (4) single-barrel guns were concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in an attempt to escape police arrest.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yenagoa, for discreet investigation to ascertain the source of the firearms and identify any other persons connected with the offence.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state.
“The Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the Police with credible and timely information that will aid ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and security.”
