Former Chelsea and Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka has opened up about the infamous dressing-room confrontation with manager Raymond Domenech during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, an incident that triggered one of the most remarkable collapses in modern international football.

The fallout led to a historical mutiny within the French camp, resulting in an 18-match international ban for the striker.

The tournament implosion saw the rest of the Les Bleus squad famously refuse to train in protest of Anelka’s immediate expulsion, leaving the French Football Federation (FFF) with no choice but to hand out sweeping suspensions upon their return.

The flashpoint occurred at halftime during France’s group-stage match against Mexico, with the score line deadlocked at 0-0. Domenech decided to substitute Anelka, sparking a heated, profanity-laced exchange that rapidly spiraled out of control.

Reflecting on the sheer frustration of the match, Anelka detailed how the tactical struggles on the pitch primed him for the eventual outburst.

“I was frustrated going into the locker room,” Anelka recalled.

“I was thinking to myself, ‘I’m not getting the ball, I’m not finding a solution. We’re playing badly, it’s 0-0 and we still haven’t scored.’ All of a sudden, the coach came in and called me out by name. When he called out my name with all that pent-up frustration, it just came out because I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that he called me out by name as if I were guilty, as if it were all my fault.”

Anelka acknowledged that his reaction was highly reactive, but emphasized that the manager should have recognized the mounting tension within the squad.“I took it as an attack. It was a big mistake. He had to know I was frustrated. He had to know I was a volcano about to erupt.”

The incident completely fractured the squad. In the days following Anelka’s dismissal, the team organized a strike, refusing to step off the team bus for a scheduled public training session in Knysna—a moment that remains a point of national embarrassment in French sports history.

Anelka, who earned 69 caps and scored 14 goals for his country, never represented France again. The heavy-handed sanctions marked the end of an era for several key veterans of the squad, forcing a complete rebuild of the national team program under subsequent management.
