Former Chelsea owner and chairman Ken Bates has died at the age of 94, bringing to an end the life of one of the most influential figures in the club’s modern history.

Bates, who was born in London, bought Chelsea for £1 in 1982 and remained chairman for 22 years before selling the club to Roman Abramovich in 2003. He later became owner and chairman of Leeds United in 2005.

Chelsea confirmed his death in a statement and paid tribute to his contribution to the club.

Chelsea pay tribute

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the loss of Ken Bates, former owner and chairman of Chelsea Football Club,” the club said.

“The club sends our heartfelt condolences to Ken’s wife Suzannah, the rest of his family and his friends.”

Chelsea also praised Bates for helping to transform the club during a difficult period.

“Ken’s determination to fight for Chelsea when times were tough, and drive the team on to winning trophies will never be forgotten.”

Lasting legacy at Stamford Bridge

Bates took charge of Chelsea in 1982 when the club faced financial uncertainty and oversaw a significant period of progress.

During his time as chairman, Chelsea won two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield.

The club also secured promotion back to the top flight and established itself among England’s leading teams before the arrival of Abramovich.

After leaving Stamford Bridge in 2003, Bates took over at Leeds United two years later, playing a key role in the club’s rebuilding efforts following financial difficulties.
