English football star John Terry has drawn attention after appearing to support a controversial policy proposal to ban the burqa in public spaces across Britain.
The former Chelsea FC and England captain reacted to an Instagram post shared by Rupert Lowe, leader of the Restore Britain party, which outlined the stance. Terry reportedly responded with three clapping emojis, interpreted by many as an endorsement.
Lowe’s proposal included banning the burqa and requiring all signage at transport hubs to be in English only. His post featured imagery of a woman wearing a burqa outside Whitechapel Station, alongside signage in Bengali, reflecting the local Bangladeshi community.
The Restore Britain leader later defended Terry, stating that the former footballer was being criticised for supporting a position he claimed reflected the views of many people. The issue of banning the burqa has long been contentious in the UK and Europe, with countries like France having already implemented restrictions under its secularism policies.
The debate has also surfaced in UK politics in recent months, including discussions involving figures from Reform UK. However, opinions within political circles remain divided. Terry has not publicly elaborated on his stance, and his representatives have not issued a formal comment.
