Germany’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been disrupted by an unexpected concern after venomous snakes were spotted near the team’s training base in North Carolina.

The four-time world champions are based in Winston-Salem for the tournament, where a recent sighting of a copperhead snake has prompted caution among players and staff.

Kimmich admits players are on alert

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich revealed that the discovery has forced players to pay closer attention to their surroundings away from the pitch.

While teams are usually focused on tactical preparations and fitness, Kimmich admitted that concerns over the local wildlife have become an unusual talking point within the squad.

The concern increased after players were informed that copperheads are venomous and that any bite would require immediate medical treatment. Although rarely fatal, bites from the species can cause serious complications and often require hospital care.

Kimmich noted that such situations are unfamiliar to many German players, given the relative rarity of dangerous wildlife encounters in their home country.

Other teams also adapting to local conditions

Germany are not alone in dealing with the issue. Reports suggest Switzerland designated part of the area around their San Diego training base as a “snake zone” before the tournament began.

Norway captain Kristian Thorstvedt also admitted he was unsettled after learning how common copperhead snakes are in North Carolina.

The sightings have highlighted some of the unique environmental challenges teams can face while competing across different regions of North America.

Germany off to flying start

Despite the unexpected distraction, Germany have made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side opened Group E with a dominant 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curacao and currently sit top of the standings.

They will return to action on June 21 when they face Ivory Coast in their second group-stage match.
