Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Tochi Okechukwu, has warned against early marriage, saying young women who are pushed into marriage and motherhood too soon risk losing sight of their dreams and ambitions.
Tochi made the statement in a post shared on his Instagram page while explaining his opposition to early marriage among women.
“I have always been an advocate against early marriage in women,” he wrote.
He said young girls should have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve before settling down.
“When a young woman is pushed into marriage and having babies too early, her dreams usually have to take a back seat,” Tochi stated.
He further warned that a woman’s identity and ambitions could become overshadowed by marriage and motherhood.
“A girl who could have grown up to become a doctor, a successful businesswoman, or a leader end up having her entire life reduced to just being known as ‘the wife of Chima Solar Enterprise,” he wrote.
Tochi said marriage is a good thing but stressed that “timing matters,” urging young women to finish school, learn skills and become independent before getting married.
