Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent position on Nigeria’s fuel subsidy policy, accusing the former presidential candidate of being inconsistent in his economic views.
Wike described Atiku as a “confused” politician and a “voodoo economist,” arguing that his position on fuel subsidy has changed in pursuit of political advantage. The FCT minister made the remarks in Abuja while speaking with journalists after inspecting ongoing road projects.
According to Wike, Atiku’s recent promise to restore fuel subsidy if elected president contradicts his position during the 2022 presidential campaign, when he advocated reforms to the subsidy system.
“Atiku will say anything to be president. He’s confused and a voodoo economist. In 2022, he said the fuel subsidy is a fraud. Now he’s saying he won’t remove the subsidy,” Wike said.
Wike’s comments followed Atiku’s renewed criticism of the government’s handling of fuel subsidy savings. Atiku, who is now the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election, has questioned what happened to the funds generated from the removal of the subsidy and said he would restore it if elected.
