Davido’s elder sister, Sharon Ademefun, has opened up about her childhood, revealing that she did not realise her family was wealthy until she turned 21 and moved to Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on The Fashion Roundtable, Sharon explained that despite being the daughter of one of Africa’s prominent businessmen, her upbringing was far more modest than many people might imagine.
According to her, she lived an ordinary life outside the schools she attended and had little knowledge of her family’s financial status while growing up.
“I didn’t even know we have money till like 21, to be honest with you. I lived a very normal life outside of my schools,” she said.
Sharon also disclosed that she worked during her high school years, cleaning changing rooms and earning five pounds a week. She explained that her father deliberately ensured his children did not become overly familiar with the family’s wealth by giving them just enough.
“I’ve always worked because my dad will give you just enough. He never let us know,” she said.
Her experience of working continued into adulthood, as she spent nearly five years working as a professional babysitter while in college. Sharon noted that the job helped her develop valuable childcare skills.
She added that it was after relocating to Nigeria that people began reacting with surprise when they discovered her family background.
Reflecting on the difference between her father’s parenting style and her approach to raising her own children, Sharon recalled how he would queue with the family at Disney theme parks like other visitors, despite his financial status.
However, she admitted that she prefers a more luxurious experience when taking her own children to the same destination.
“When I take my kids to Disney now, we’re going Disney VIP because I’m not queuing for anybody,” she joked.
Sharon also described her father as a humble man who rarely flaunted his wealth. However, she noted that he has recently begun encouraging her children to embrace their family identity.
She humorously suggested that the popular 30BG slogan associated with her younger brother, Davido, may have influenced their father, joking that it had “entered his spirit.”
