Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Sammie Jacob, also known simply as Sammie, has shared his experience with the emotional and financial challenges that come with fame. He encouraged fans to understand that mental health is important and not everything seen online reflects reality.
According to him, social media often gives the impression that celebrities are thriving, but many are quietly dealing with depression, pressure, and personal struggles.
“Everyone is going through something, even the ones who look happy,” he said, emphasizing that peace of mind is worth more than social validation or online attention.
In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, Sammie revealed that he faced multiple episodes of depression after leaving the Big Brother Naija house. Despite appearing fine on social media, he said he frequently cried alone in his apartment in Lekki.
He explained that the expectation to maintain a certain lifestyle, along with financial difficulties, made life in Lagos particularly tough.
“There were days I had no electricity and no money,” he said. “I would cry, cook noodles, dress up nicely and go out smiling. Nobody had any idea what I was facing.”
Sammie disclosed that one of his biggest struggles was adjusting to life after the show. While many believed he was enjoying a luxurious lifestyle, the reality was different. He recalled checking his bank alerts and seeing mostly debits with only one small credit, even though people assumed he was “balling.”
He also mentioned that many other former housemates go through similar experiences but refrain from speaking up due to pressure and public expectations.
Sammie urged people to be open about their mental health challenges and seek support when they need it.
