Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi has opened up about some of the most difficult moments of his career, revealing how he continued to perform professionally despite facing painful family experiences.

The comedian shared the emotional account during an appearance on the Nancy Isime Show, where he was asked if he had ever had to entertain an audience while going through a personal crisis.

Bovi recalled that in 2012, his mother was kidnapped while he was in Ilashe, Lagos, attending an event. He said he received the distressing  news while the incident was unfolding in Delta State.

“So in 2012, my mom was kidnapped, I was called, but I was in Ilashe doing an event,” Bovi recalled.

According to the comedian, he immediately began making calls to find out what was happening. However, despite the frightening situation, he had to return to the event and continue with his professional responsibilities.

“I made a few calls. ‘MC, we need you now.’ Ran back, continued working, doing the event,” he said.

Bovi explained that although he remained on stage entertaining guests, he was mentally and emotionally consumed by what was happening to his mother.

“I was just going through the motions, and people were laughing, but my soul wasn’t there. My mind wasn’t there,” he said.

He noted that his mother was eventually rescued several hours after she was kidnapped.

The comedian also opened up about another painful experience that occurred four years later following his mother’s death in January 2016.

Bovi revealed that he had been booked to host the 60th birthday celebration of businessman and politician Ben Bruce the following month. Her recent death left him unsure about whether he should honour the booking or take time away from work to grieve.

“When she passed in 2016, she passed in January, and in February, Ben Bruce was having his 60th birthday, and they wanted me to host. So I was conflicted. Do I do this?” he recalled.

He admitted that he questioned whether accepting the job so soon after losing his mother would make him appear insensitive.

“Am I insensitive for working when the person who gave birth to me is no more?” he asked himself.

Despite his emotional turmoil, Bovi eventually decided to honour the commitment and went ahead with the event.

He explained that he performed his duties and entertained the guests as expected, even though he was privately battling intense grief.

“I would get on stage, do my part, do my bit. I was hosting, and people were laughing, and they didn’t even know I was dying inside,” he said.

Bovi’s account highlights the often unseen emotional struggles entertainers can experience, as they are sometimes required to put personal pain aside and deliver performances even during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
