The controversy began after the Anambra State Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, revealed that the current administration continues to repay loans borrowed by past governors, explicitly naming Obi and his successor, Willie Obiano. Okafor noted that deductions are still being made from the state’s monthly federal allocation to service these inherited liabilities. He made the disclosures during an interview on the Voice of Ndi Anambra Podcast, which was published online by Anambra State New Media

Responding swiftly via his social media platforms, Obi rejected the allegation in its entirety.

“I left office as Governor nearly 13 years ago,” Obi stated. “On the day I left office, I was not owing any salaries, pensions, gratuities, or any money that the Anambra State Government was supposed to pay. I did not owe a single supplier or contractor. If you find even one person I owed, I will end my 2027 campaign today.” he wrote in part
