Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Thursday that he held a private, two-and-a-half-hour meeting with the country’s new leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

This marks the first official confirmation from a senior government member that the Ayatollah has been seen in person since he was appointed by the Assembly of Experts over two months ago.

The meeting occurs against a backdrop of intense speculation regarding the leader’s health after he succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during military strikes on February 28.

Since his appointment, the new leader has not made a single public appearance or released any video footage, leading to international reports suggesting he may have sustained life-altering injuries.

Pezeshkian described the interaction as completely unmediated and emphasized a direct line of communication. He highlighted Mojtaba’s sincere and humble behavior, claiming the atmosphere was one of trust and empathy, though he provided no information regarding the location of the meeting or the specific topics discussed.

Despite this positive account from the President, several factors continue to fuel the mystery surrounding the Ayatollah’s physical state. Reports from international outlets have suggested he suffered severe burns and injuries during the February strikes that could impact his ability to speak or walk.

Public anxiety also spiked recently after a mural was unveiled depicting Mojtaba alongside martyred figures like his father and Qassem Soleimani. Furthermore, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency recently caused a stir by briefly referring to him as the martyred leader before retracting the statement as a mistake.

During the same address to trade unions and market representatives, Pezeshkian pivoted to domestic stability and called for stricter management of energy consumption.

He issued a stern warning against the excessive spending of state resources and pleaded for national unity. He specifically criticized the trend of labeling citizens as traitors or spies, a sensitive topic as Iran’s judiciary has reportedly increased the issuance of heavy sentences and executions in the period following the recent ceasefire.
