Leeds United defender, Isaac Schmidt, is no longer eligible to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

This comes after the Switzerland Football Association successfully secured the international future of the Leeds United loanee, beating the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in the race for the player.

Schmidt made cap-tying appearance for Switzerland on Monday, in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier 3-0 win against Slovenia St. Jakob Stadium.

The 25-year-old was born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and a Nigerian mother.

Schmidt was eligible to represent the national teams of Nigeria and Germany prior to his competitive debut for The Red Crosses against Slovenia.

He came off the bench in the second half to replace midfielder Silvan Widmer, a substitution that officially cap-tied him to Switzerland over Nigeria and Germany, respectively.

Schmidt has now followed in the footsteps of the likes of Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor, all of whom were eligible to play for Nigeria before cap-tying appearances for Switzerland.

He is currently on loan at German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen from Leeds United.
