President of Ghana, John Mahama, stated in a presidential dialogue that LGBTQ+ related issues are not the most urgent challenges facing the country, stressing that Ghana is still dealing with more pressing national needs.

According to him, the country’s priority remains the provision of basic necessities such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter.

He made the comments during an engagement with the World Affairs Council, noting that while LGBTQ+ issues remain a sensitive and emotional topic globally, they are not at the top of Ghana’s national agenda.

He also referenced ongoing debates around a private member’s bill in Parliament, describing it as part of a broader national conversation shaped by constitutional values, human rights, and social cohesion.

Mahama added that Ghana’s position is guided by its constitution and democratic processes, emphasizing the need for dialogue and respect for differing views.

He further acknowledged international reactions to Ghana’s stance, including concerns from global partners and recent developments such as the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University, noting that such events highlight the importance of continued engagement and mutual respect.

He concluded that Ghana will continue to uphold its democratic values while engaging constructively with the international community.
