Luigi Mangione has admitted in federal court to shooting UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Officer Brian Thompson in Manhattan, pleading guilty to federal stalking charges.

The 28-year-old entered the plea before a federal judge regarding the December 2024 killing, which generated intense national media coverage and public attention surrounding the United States healthcare system. Mangione faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, with federal prosecutors confirming they will pursue a life term at his scheduled sentencing on December 18.

Addressing the court during his appearance, Mangione acknowledged his direct involvement in the fatal shooting.

“On the morning of December 4, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.”

Following the guilty plea, defense attorneys filed a motion in New York state court seeking the dismissal of separate state murder charges, citing double jeopardy protections. While federal and state jurisdictions can technically try an individual for distinct offenses arising from the same conduct, defense counsel Karen Friedman Agnifilo argued that state prosecution should be barred.

“We just filed our motion in state court, explaining why the state charges must be dismissed under New York’s double jeopardy protections.”

The resolution of federal capital charges occurred earlier in the year when a judge dismissed two federal counts that carried the death penalty.

Reacting to the plea and the ongoing public fascination with the case, United States Attorney Jamie McDonald emphasized the gravity of the offense during a news briefing:

“There can be no celebrity in assassination.”

Court proceedings revealed additional technical details regarding the weapon used in the attack. Mangione admitted to fabricating a firearm using a 3D printer and outfitting the weapon with a magazine and a silencer.

Investigators previously detailed how Mangione traveled by bus from Atlanta to New York ten days prior to the incident, checked into a Manhattan hostel using false identification, and conducted surveillance around the venue where Thompson was scheduled to attend an investor conference. Following a nationwide search, law enforcement officers apprehended Mangione on December 9 at a restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
