Libyan police have arrested an illegal African migrant who randomly attacked passing cars and pedestrians with a machete in the Janzour district of western Tripoli.

The suspect, who appeared to be mentally disturbed, went on a violent rampage with a machete in the district, attacking passing cars and pedestrians.

According to reports, the assailant was subdued when a passerby, acting in self-defense, shot him in the leg.

The wounded man was then taken to a hospital, where he was placed under medical care.

Local residents expressed shock at the incident, which caused panic in the area as the attacker swung the machete at vehicles and people on the street.

In a report on Sunday, May 31, 2026, Libya Observer confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody following the violent incident and has been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings.
