A Federal High Court, sitting in Kano, has sentenced a 23-year-old man, Kabir Adamu, to 8 years imprisonment for smuggling cannabis sativa concealed inside loaf of bread into a court premises.

Kabir Adamu was apprehended on 14 January 2026 by officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service at the Kano State High Court, Miller Road after personnel discovered a quantity of cannabis concealed inside a loaf of bread intended for a defendant known locally as “Wizzy,” who was undergoing trial.

The suspect and the exhibit were immediately transferred to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.

Following diligent investigation and prosecution by NDLEA operatives, Kabir Adamu was convicted on 22 April 2026 and sentenced by Hon. Justice SM Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Court One, Kano, to eight (8) years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Commander of the NDLEA, Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, commended the court, adding that the conviction demonstrates the commitment and collaboration of law enforcement and judicial authorities in combating substance abuse and drug-related crime.

“This decisive ruling underscores our collective resolve to deny criminal elements any opportunity to undermine public safety and institutional order,” Commander Lawal said.

“It will serve as a firm deterrent to those who attempt to smuggle illegal substances into court premises, correctional facilities, or any other vulnerable environment.”

Commander Lawal expressed appreciation for the support and leadership of the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, whose renewed drive for a drug-free Nigeria continues to strengthen agency operations across the federation.

The NDLEA urged the public to remain vigilant and to continue supporting law enforcement by reporting drug-related activities as part of the ongoing effort to achieve a drug-free Nigeria.
