A man, Athumani Juma, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old boy in Kwale County, Kenya.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
According to the statement, the minor, who was robbed of his innocence in a horrific act of sexual violence, has secured justice following the conviction of Juma.
In a judgment delivered at the Msambweni Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court, the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, bringing to a close a case that began with the abuse of a child in June 2025.
“The outcome underscores the power of diligent investigations, credible testimony, medical evidence and coordinated action in pursuing justice for vulnerable victims,” the statement read.
“The ordeal unfolded on 7 June 2025, at Vivalani Village in Lungalunga Sub-County, when Juma lured the young boy to his house with the promise of sweets.
“Once inside, with no one else present, he subjected the child to horrific abuse before threatening him with dire consequences if he dared to tell anyone.
“Frightened into silence, the child initially kept the ordeal to himself, confiding only in his brothers. But the abuse soon left a distressing physical consequence, developing into a troubling condition that eventually brought the hidden horror to light.
“On 14 June 2025, a relative learned of the child’s condition and sought an explanation.
“The boy finally disclosed what had happened, identifying Juma, a water vendor known to him, as the culprit.
“The disclosure prompted a swift response, with the matter reported to the police and the suspect apprehended by members of the public before being handed over to law enforcement officers.
“Investigations subsequently got underway, with officers working to establish the circumstances of the offence and secure evidence to support the case.
“When the matter came before the court, five prosecution witnesses testified. The accused denied the charges, claiming he had been framed.
“The court, however, found his defence unconvincing. In its judgment, the magistrate held that the child’s testimony was credible and consistent, with the medical evidence further corroborating his account. The prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“On 5 October 2026, Juma was convicted of defilement contrary to Section 8(1), as read with Section 8(2) of the Sexual Offences Act, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
“This case is a stark reminder that sexual abuse against children must never be concealed, excused or ignored.
“Timely reporting, thorough investigations and close collaboration between communities and justice institutions remain critical to ensuring that offenders are brought to account.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) remains resolute in the fight against sexual offences and all forms of violence against children.
“Members of the public are urged to report suspected child abuse without delay at the nearest police station or anonymously through the DCI toll-free line on 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
“Protecting children is a shared responsibility, and silence must never be allowed to shield perpetrators from justice.”
