Mexico’s security operatives capture drug lord El Chapo’s brother

A major security operation in north-western Mexico has sparked speculation over the possible capture of Aureliano Guzmán Loera, a senior figure linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and brother of Joaquín Guzmán, but authorities have denied he was among those arrested.

The operation, carried out in the mountainous “Triángulo Dorado” region near the Sinaloa-Durango border, involved coordinated air and ground deployments, including Black Hawk helicopters and surveillance aircraft. Security measures were also heightened in Culiacán, where airport activity was temporarily restricted to official flights.

Rumours of Guzmán Loera’s arrest spread rapidly following the raids, but Mexico’s Defence Ministry later said he had not been detained. Omar García Harfuch confirmed that arrests were made during the operation, but noted that authorities could not yet publicly identify those detained as investigations were ongoing.

The confusion reflects the long-standing status of “El Guano” as one of Mexico’s most wanted figures. The U.S. Department of State continues to offer a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his capture and conviction, citing his alleged role in large-scale drug trafficking operations involving cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana and fentanyl.

Recent operations have increasingly targeted networks linked to Guzmán Loera. In 2024, authorities arrested a suspected associate identified as Luis “N,” also known as “El R-8,” described as a security chief tied to his faction.

Analysts say the Sinaloa Cartel has become more fragmented in recent years, operating less as a single hierarchy and more as a collection of competing factions, including groups associated with Los Chapitos, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and other leaders, alongside the faction linked to “El Guano”.

This fragmentation has contributed to ongoing violence in Sinaloa and intensified pressure on Mexican authorities to dismantle cartel operations. While Wednesday’s raid appears to form part of that broader strategy, officials have not confirmed the capture of Guzmán Loera, despite widespread speculation.
