The Nigerian military has arrested Nollywood filmmaker and actor Stanley Amandi over his connection with an alleged coup plot against President Tinubu.

According to Premium Times, the veteran actor had allegedly participated in a foiled coup plot to overthrow President Tinubu’s government.

The filmmaker, who doubles as a former Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Enough Chapter, was reportedly detained in September 2025 alongside several military officers. They were accused of planning a violent overthrow, including potential assassinations of top officials.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the plotters recruited Amandi to function as a propagandist. While he was not accused of bearing arms, security sources said his alleged role involved shaping narratives and messaging to support the planned takeover.

On Monday, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that investigations into the alleged attempt to illegally oust the government had been concluded.

In a statement, the military said officers indicted in the matter would be arraigned before military judicial panels, describing the investigation as thorough and conducted in line with established procedures. The findings identified several officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.

It added that such actions were inconsistent with the values and ethics of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Military personnel involved are expected to face court-martial proceedings, while civilians named in the investigation, including Amandi, will be tried in civil courts.

Mr Amandi has featured in many Nollywood movies and is known for his work as an actor, production manager and director.

His notable works include “The Album,” where he served as director; “Tiger King,” which he also directed and produced in 2008; “Cornerstone,” produced in 2019; and “Once Upon a Dream,” in which he appeared as an actor in 2024.

Mr Amandi’s last Instagram post was on 19 September 2025, shortly before his arrest.
