Gary Neville has called for his removal from Sky Sports’ coverage of Manchester City matches until the club’s ongoing financial appeal reaches a conclusion
The former Manchester United defender made the comments after City’s 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, where he was part of the Sky Sports commentary team.
City are challenging an independent commission’s findings that the club breached multiple Premier League financial regulations. The potential consequences remain uncertain as the appeal process continues.
Neville believes the unresolved case makes it difficult to assess City’s achievements without considering the possible implications of the verdict.
Neville raises concerns over Premier League uncertainty
Speaking about the situation, Neville revealed that he had requested a temporary break from covering City matches.
“We were just doing the podcast and I said, if you could take me off Manchester City games for the next few months, until the verdict has been heard, I’d be delighted,” he told Sky Sports.
Neville acknowledged the difficulty of winning at Anfield but said the ongoing case continued to affect discussions about City’s performances.
“To come and win at Anfield is really difficult and we should be eulogising over them without a ‘but’ or any hesitation,” he added.
“But there is that thing in the back of your mind.”
The former England international also warned that the situation could have wider consequences for the competition if the findings are upheld.
“This is not good for the Premier League right now. That is what I have recognised.
“It’s really bad for the Premier League and it’s going to continue for a few months.”
Appeal process draws reactions from City supporters
Manchester City lodged their appeal on October 1, with a hearing required within 12 weeks of that date. A final decision is expected within 30 days of the hearing, although concerns remain about how long the wider dispute could take to resolve.
The club continues to deny wrongdoing and is seeking to overturn the commission’s findings.
Neville’s comments also attracted a response from Oasis frontman and City supporter Liam Gallagher, who criticised the pundit on social media.
Gallagher wrote on X: “Gary Neville threatening to not commentate on city games anymore HALLA F***ING LULU take
your Scouse mate with ya ya pair of BIG CRY BABYS MCFC LG x”.
City’s victory fails to silence criticism
On the pitch, City secured an emphatic win over Liverpool after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring before Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki added further goals to complete the 3-0 victory.
However, the result did little to end the debate surrounding the club’s financial case. Broadcaster Piers Morgan also criticised City on social media, describing the situation as a “total farce” and accusing the club of “staggering cheating”.
