A newborn baby has been recovered from an uncompleted building in the Unguwar Abattoir area of Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A resident, Joshua Musa, told Daily Trust on Friday that the baby was discovered in the early Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at about 6.22am by a neighbour.

According to him, the infant, wrapped in a piece of cloth, is suspected to have been abandoned by an unidentified woman.

He explained that the baby was found by a resident who had gone into the uncompleted structure to defecate and immediately raised the alarm, prompting vigilantes in the area to respond.

“The vigilantes alerted the police, who came to the scene and evacuated the baby to the Social Welfare Department,” he said.

An official of the council’s Social Welfare Department, Mrs. Lami Ayuba, confirmed the incident, stating that the child has since been taken to an orphanage in Gwako for proper care.

She added that efforts are ongoing to trace the mother of the baby.

A police source at the Gwagwalada Division, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the development, noting that investigations are underway to identify those responsible.
