Nigeria could be on the verge of becoming an influential figure in African football following the recent discussions surrounding awards, etc., with CAF.

Nigeria could be set for another major role in African football administration, with reports suggesting the country will host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026 and may host the next CAF Awards alongside.

The development comes after the President of the Confederation of African Football, Dr Patrice Motsepe, held a bilateral meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

CAF had earlier confirmed that Motsepe was attending the summit from May 11 to 12, 2026, where discussions focused on African development, innovation, strategic partnerships, and football growth across the continent.

CAF also shared pictures from the engagement on its official X handle, confirming that both leaders met in Nairobi. The football body wrote that “CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and the Nigerian Head of State, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, met today on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.”

Beyond the bilateral talks, it was also mentioned that Nigeria will host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026, with the country also being linked to the hosting of the CAF Awards. If confirmed, it would mark another significant moment for Nigeria’s football profile on the continent.

The CAF Awards remain one of African football’s biggest annual events, celebrating the continent’s best male and female players, coaches, clubs, and national teams. Hosting the ceremony would place Nigeria at the centre of African football conversations and could further boost the country’s standing within CAF’s wider development and commercial agenda.
