FIFA has made their final decision on the 2026 World Cup eligibility appeal that surfaced after the Nigeria vs DR Congo playoffs.

Nigeria’s lingering hopes of a “backdoor” qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been officially extinguished following a decisive update from world football’s governing body.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, FIFA released the final list of participants for the upcoming inter-confederation play-off tournament, confirming the Democratic Republic of Congo as the sole representative for Africa.

The announcement effectively dismisses a formal petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation, which had challenged the eligibility of certain Congolese players following the Super Eagles’ heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to the Leopards in November 2025.

The dispute centred on the participation of high-profile dual-nationals in the DR Congo squad, including former England youth internationals Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe. The NFF argued that the fielding of these players violated specific eligibility regulations, seeking to have the result of the CAF play-off final overturned.

However, by naming DR Congo in the official lineup for the March play-offs in Mexico without further reservation, FIFA has signalled that the original results stand. The news has left Nigerian football fans in a state of mourning, as the nation prepares to miss out on its second consecutive World Cup.

With the final line-up now set, DR Congo joins Iraq, Bolivia, Jamaica, Suriname, and New Caledonia in a six-team battle for the final two spots in the expanded 48-team tournament. As a seeded team in the play-offs, the Leopards will head straight to a winner-takes-all final on March 31 in Zapopan, Mexico, where they will face the winner of a preliminary match between Jamaica and New Caledonia.
