The family of Sarah Danh, a 27-year-old Texas nurse who fell into a life-threatening coma during her honeymoon in Japan, is celebrating what they call a “nothing short of a miracle” turnaround.

Three weeks after she was medically evacuated back to the United States, her uncle, Khang Le, shared a new photo of the newlywed sitting up in her hospital bed and smiling, noting that she has progressed far faster than medical professionals anticipated. Danh, a nurse from San Antonio, fell ill on April 9, 2026 just two days into her trip to Tokyo with her husband, Luke Gradl.

What began as mild malaise quickly escalated into acute liver failure, and upon her return to San Antonio on April 21, doctors discovered she had suffered a stroke resulting in severe brain damage, leading to warnings that she might never wake up.

However, her recovery has been marked by extraordinary progress in a very short window. After being taken off life support on May 1, she regained the ability to remember, recognize, and communicate with her loved ones.

Physically, she is gaining strength each day, moving from taking small assisted steps to sitting up independently. Her uncle confirmed that while her liver remains stable with some expected fluctuations, she will soon be moved to Houston’s TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital to begin the next stage of her intensive rehabilitation.

The crisis began just weeks after Sarah and Luke tied the knot on March 21 in Houston. Gradl, who described the event as their “dream wedding,” recalled that there were no signs of illness before they jetted off to Japan.

The sudden health decline forced the couple into an emergency room just before midnight on their second day abroad. The family has expressed deep gratitude for the medical teams at Methodist Hospital and the overwhelming community support that helped fund the complex $180,000 medevac flight required to bring her home.
