Ogun Crime Watch has urged the Nigeria Police Force to question Nollywood actor Kunle Afod over a video in which he reportedly criticised the emergency response to Friday’s crash at Saapade on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. NigerianState Updates
In a statement issued by its president, Olumide Martin, the group said Ogun State emergency responders arrived at the crash scene at 12:28 p.m. and that Afod reportedly posted the video at 12:29 p.m., one minute later.
The group said responders were already attending to victims when the video went online. It called on police to establish when the footage was recorded, examine the circumstances of its publication and determine whether any laws had been broken.
Ogun Crime Watch alleged that the video was intended to portray the state government’s response negatively, undermine public confidence in its emergency services and benefit political opponents. The group said its call for an investigation was compatible with freedom of expression and legitimate criticism of government, but argued that public statements about emergencies should be accurate and responsible.
The crash involved a Mazda bus carrying 18 passengers. The vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre burst before hitting a concrete barrier near Saapade. Thirteen passengers were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.
The group expressed sympathy for those injured and their families and wished the passengers receiving treatment a speedy recovery. It also urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous driving, maintain their vehicles and comply with Federal Road Safety Corps regulations.
Ogun Crime Watch called on public figures and social media influencers to verify information before posting about emergencies, warning that inaccurate reports could cause unnecessary panic and weaken public confidence in emergency responders.
