Michael Olise has further boosted his growing reputation as one of world football’s brightest stars after delivering a match-winning performance for France in their final World Cup warm-up fixture.
The Bayern Munich winger scored his first international hat-trick as France defeated Northern Ireland 3-0, underlining why many observers believe he could emerge as one of the standout players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With established stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue also in the French attack, it was Olise who stole the spotlight with a display of quality.
His first goal came after reacting quickest to a deflected effort from Dembele before he added a powerful strike and completed his treble with a curling finish.
Rapid rise continues
Olise’s latest performance is the milestone in a remarkable rise that has accelerated since his move from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich in 2024.
The 24-year-old initially needed time to establish himself at international level, failing to score in his first five appearances for France.
However, his hat-trick against Northern Ireland took his tally to seven goals in 12 matches.
Former France striker Louis Saha believes the winger has the qualities required to compete among football’s elite individual performers.
“Consistency is the hardest and from his point of view, you have to be in that conversation every time you want a Ballon d’Or,” Saha said.
“I think that is what he is dreaming of and that is what we want in the World Cup.”
Saha also highlighted the competition within the French squad, adding: “It is unbelievable in this squad to have three possible Ballon d’Or winners.”
Deschamps backs winger’s influence
France coach Didier Deschamps praised Olise’s development and believes he could play a crucial role in the team’s World Cup ambitions.
“Michael is amazing. You can see it, he’s really confident right now,” Deschamps said.
“He’s decisive and clinical. For an offensive player, he’s making the efforts to defend as well.”
Deschamps acknowledged that Olise needed time to settle into the national team setup but believes the winger is now performing at his highest level.
France head into the World Cup with one of the tournament’s most feared attacks, but Olise’s recent form has elevated him from a promising talent to a player increasingly being discussed among football’s biggest stars.
