Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Chief Gbenga Ajibade for alleged murder.

The spokesperson of the Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, disclosed that investigations into the incident had commenced.

Ojelabi urged the public to remain calm while assuring that justice would be served.

NEWSUNPLUG had reported that Chief Ajibade was suspended by the Ijesa Sports Club following his alleged involvement in the poisoning incident.

The suspension was made public through an official statement issued by the Club’s Director of Social and Publicity, Kenneth Opebiyi, on Wednesday, August 7, 2025.

The suspension the statement added followed disturbing allegations that Chief Ajibade attempted to murder a young man over a dispute involving stolen maize.

Chief Ajibade in a video obtained by DAILY POST was seen forcing a young man accused of theft to take a poisonous substance in Ilesa, Osun State.

The incident, which occurred in the Ireti Ayo area of Ilesa, involved a 25-year-old man, Ebenezer, who was accused of stealing two pieces of maize from Chief Ajibade’s farm.

Ajibade, it was gathered, is the President of Ijesa Sports Club, Ilesa.

DAILY POST also gathered that the incident occurred over a week ago and the father of the suspect on hearing about that his son after forcibly drinking the poisonous substance had also collapsed and died on the spot.

Ojelabi, however, clarified that the victim survived the poisoning.

“Doctors at Wesley Guild Hospital stabilised Ebenezer. He did not die, contrary to what was told to his father,” he confirmed.

“The father, after hearing false information about his son’s death, unfortunately died of shock. This has made the matter even more tragic and complicated,” Ojelabi noted.

He revealed that, “The police have since traced and arrested Chief Ajibade in his hometown of Ipetu Ijesa. He was subsequently moved to Osogbo for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and we are conducting thorough investigations into the circumstances of the incident,” Ojelabi said.

He reiterated the commitment of the command to uphold the law and advised members of the public against taking justice into their own hands.

The police spokesperson added that once investigations are concluded, he would be charged to court.
