Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has addressed the backlash she received after playing a lesbian inmate in the second season of the hit series Blood Sisters.

In an interview on Yanga FM, the actress revealed that her role in the show sparked criticism from some Christian viewers who questioned her faith and moral values based solely on the character she portrayed.

According to her, the reactions highlighted a common misunderstanding about the nature of acting and storytelling. She noted that many people struggled to separate her real identity from the fictional roles she takes on in films.

Obasi explained that acting is a professional craft that requires performers to embody different characters, regardless of their personal beliefs or lifestyles. She added that her experience on the matter made her reflect on how audiences interpret films without fully appreciating the creative process behind them.

She further clarified that her character was not intended to promote or encourage same-sex relationships, but rather to reflect certain realities that exist in society, particularly within correctional settings. She said the storyline was drawn from real-life experiences and handled carefully by the production team to avoid unnecessary explicit scenes.

The actress maintained that the purpose of the project was purely storytelling, not to pass moral judgment or endorse any particular behaviour.

Obasi also recounted facing direct criticism from some Christian viewers who, according to her, judged her personally because of the role she played.

Her words…

“The Christians came for me and attacked. They said ‘as a child of God how would I take such role’ and I said ‘we are telling real stories of what happens in the prison.’ However the production company was sensitive enough not to depict the horridness of it. They are not in support of it (lesbianism) but they are telling the story. There is so much positivity. I put my mind on that.”

@Vïçtōr S Ntã:”Before you speak ask three questions What was the significance of the role in the movie? Was there exposure of any sensitive parts of the body? Does the role encourage lesbianism?”

@Maii Szn:”Christians are allowed to to correct other Christians …because the moment I saw that scene the first thing that came to mind was… is she not a Christian? …. Christianity values should not be seen only at home… even at work show it”

@Paulette Oroyo:”Does it mean the lesbian thing does happen in the church or reality? What do you want to take and learn please?”
