Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died, leaving the East African nation mourning the loss of its First Gentleman.
The news was confirmed by President William Ruto on the morning of Monday, September 7, 2026, who sent a heartfelt message of condolence to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” Ruto said.
In his message, the Kenyan President extended condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady Rachel Ruto, his family and himself, as he stood with Tanzania during the difficult moment.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, my family and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania,” Ruto said.
Ruto described Hafidh’s death as a profound loss for President Samia and her family, noting the different roles he had played in their lives.
“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” he said.
The President further assured Tanzania that Kenya was standing with the country as it comes to terms with the loss of Hafidh, who had served as Tanzania’s First Gentleman since Samia became President in March 2021.
“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief,” Ruto said.
He also turned his message towards the bereaved family, praying for strength and comfort for President Samia and her children as they mourned their husband and father.
“May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest,” Ruto said.
The condolence message came shortly after Tanzania announced Hafidh’s death on Monday, with Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirming that he had died at 8am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.
Funeral arrangements were announced as being underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
