Sean “Diddy” Combs has secured a favourable ruling in his $100 million defamation lawsuit against attorney Ariel Mitchell and her client, Courtney Burgess, after a judge declined to dismiss the case.

Mitchell had sought to have Combs’ lawsuit thrown out, but the judge rejected her arguments and allowed the case to proceed. In an order dated September 4, the judge found that Mitchell’s disputed allegations were not merely expressions of opinion or rhetorical hyperbole. According to the ruling, statements alleging that Combs s3xually assaulted people and secretly recorded s3xual partners have “precise meanings that are readily understood.”

Combs sued Mitchell and Burgess over statements he has characterised as “outlandish claims” and “baseless speculation” intended to satisfy public interest in what he described as “wild lies.” Burgess has claimed that he possesses videos allegedly showing Combs s3xually assaulting celebrities and minors. Combs has denied the allegations.

The music mogul is now seeking $100 million in damages after initially filing the lawsuit for $50 million. Mitchell previously rejected Combs’ claims and accused him of attempting to silence alleged victims and their advocates.

“This is just a pathetic ploy to silence victims and people who stand up for victims. Diddy has time to sue but refuses to accept service for the lawsuits already filed against him. I look forward to countersuing and ensuring the court punishes not only Diddy but also his lawyers who filed this pathetic lawsuit for this frivolous and meritless filing,” Mitchell said.

The defamation dispute follows Combs’ 2025 federal criminal trial, in which he was convicted on two counts of transporting individuals across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. He was acquitted of the more serious racketeering conspiracy and s3x trafficking charges.

Combs remains incarcerated, with his projected prison release date recently moved to February 5, 2028. The latest ruling does not determine whether Mitchell and Burgess defamed Combs or whether the disputed allegations are true. It allows Combs’ lawsuit to continue.
