Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement with Thibaut Courtois to extend his contract until 2028, as the Spanish giants move to secure the future of one of their most important players.
The reported deal would keep the Belgian goalkeeper at the Santiago Bernabéu beyond his existing contract, which was expected to run until June 2027. Transfer reports indicate that the extension would add another year to his current agreement.
Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his social media account that Real Madrid are keen to retain Courtois, whose performances have made him a central figure in the club’s pursuit of domestic and European honours.
However, the club’s official announcement and the final contractual details remain important to establishing the agreement’s formal status.
Why Real Madrid Want to Keep Courtois?
Courtois has been a key member of Real Madrid’s squad since joining from Chelsea in August 2018. His height, reflexes, command of the penalty area, and ability to deliver crucial saves have helped establish him as one of the leading goalkeepers of his generation.
Real Madrid’s confidence in the Belgian is also reflected in his performances on major occasions, when his shot-stopping ability has repeatedly helped the team navigate difficult matches.
The club has therefore been keen to maintain stability in the goalkeeping position rather than rush into replacing an experienced player who continues to play an important role.
What are Courtois’ Achievements at Real Madrid?
Courtois has enjoyed considerable success during his time in the Spanish capital. His honours with the club include two UEFA Champions League titles, three LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three Club World Cups, as recorded in the club’s May 2026 profile. He also won the Yashin Trophy in 2022, recognising him as the world’s outstanding goalkeeper, and the Zamora Trophy for the 2019/20 LaLiga season.
These achievements underline why retaining him remains an important consideration for the club.
What the Contract Extension means for Real Madrid?
If finalised, the extension until 2028 would give Real Madrid greater certainty over their first-choice goalkeeper for the coming seasons. It would also allow the club to plan its long-term goalkeeping succession without immediately losing the services of an experienced player.
Real Madrid have other goalkeeping options, including Andriy Lunin, while young goalkeepers in the club’s development system could compete for future opportunities.
Courtois remains an experienced presence in a team with ambitions of competing for the biggest prizes in European football. A contract extension through 2028 would take his association with Real Madrid into a tenth season, assuming he remains at the club throughout the deal.
The next major development to watch is Real Madrid’s official confirmation of the reported agreement, including the final duration of the contract. For now, the reports point towards a continued partnership between Courtois and Los Blancos, with the Belgian expected to remain an important part of the club’s plans.
