Real Madrid have decided to leave the European Super League nearly five years since it was first proposed in 2021.

The controversial European Super League project officially came to an end after Real Madrid who is the last major club still publicly linked to the idea officially announced their exit. The most founding clubs (including Barcelona) had initially abandoned the idea over time, the initiative had lacked both support and momentum.

UEFA and Real Madrid released a joint statement confirming the decision.

“This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented.
Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology. This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented.”

Real Madrid and UEFA (Europe’s football governing body) have reached an agreement to end all ongoing legal battles connected to the Super League dispute. This deal emphasizes returning focus to the traditional European football structure including sporting merit and club sustainability.

The agreement is described as being for the good of European club football” and resolves the legal fight that followed Real Madrid’s earlier challenge against UEFA’s approach.
