Dani Carvajal will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, bringing an end to a highly successful spell with the club that saw him become one of the most decorated players in its history. The Spanish giants confirmed the defender’s departure in a statement released on Monday, May 18.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of our club and world football,” the club said. Carvajal, 34, made 450 appearances for Real Madrid and won 27 trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
The defender progressed through Real Madrid’s La Fábrica youth academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Real Madrid re-signed him the following year, and he went on to establish himself as one of the club’s key players for more than a decade.
Club president Florentino Pérez praised Carvajal’s contribution and legacy at the club. “Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy,” Pérez said.
The defender had reportedly hoped to represent Spain at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, but injuries throughout the campaign have disrupted his season. According to Spanish media reports, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is not expected to include him in the squad for the tournament.
Carvajal is set to play his final match for Real Madrid this weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga. His departure comes at the end of another disappointing campaign for Real Madrid, who are set to finish a second consecutive season without winning a major trophy.
