AC Milan have reached an agreement with Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim to become the club’s new head coach following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri.
The Rossoneri have been searching for a new manager since dismissing Allegri on 25 May after the club failed to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
According to reports from Italy, Amorim has emerged as Milan’s preferred candidate after weeks of discussions and evaluations involving several coaching options.
Portuguese coach set for Milan move
The former Sporting CP and Manchester United manager is expected to sign a two-year contract with an option for an additional season.
Reports indicate the deal is worth around €3.5 million per season, with additional bonuses linked to trophies and Champions League qualification.
Amorim has been without a club since leaving Manchester United in January and was initially expected to take a break from coaching before Milan’s approach changed his plans.
The 41-year-old is reportedly due to arrive in Italy soon to finalise the agreement and begin preparations for his new role.
Long-held dream close to reality
Italian and Portuguese media reports suggest Milan’s interest proved particularly attractive because of Amorim’s long-standing admiration for the club.
In an interview with Portuguese outlet Tribuna Expresso in 2017, the former midfielder revealed his affection for the Rossoneri while reflecting on his childhood football inspirations.
“As a child I liked watching Benfica and Milan. I remember watching Milan videos with Maldini, Baresi, Gullit, Rijkaard and Savićević,” Amorim said.
“My childhood dreams were to play for Benfica and Milan. I achieved one of them. Now I must become a coach at the other.”
Amorim reportedly beat competition from several candidates, including Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle, whose appointment would have required Milan to negotiate compensation with the Saudi club.
With Amorim currently unattached, Milan were able to move quickly and secure an agreement for the Portuguese tactician, who is now expected to lead the club’s rebuilding project ahead of the new season.
