Media personality Morayo Brown has defended actress Shaffy Bello following the backlash that trailed her recent comments during an appearance on The Morayo Show.
Shaffy Bello had sparked reactions online after speaking about women involved in escorting, popularly referred to as call girls. During the conversation, the actress advised them to think about personal growth and eventually move beyond that lifestyle, while also speaking without condemnation.
Her remarks quickly stirred controversy, with several social media users accusing her of encouraging prostitution.
Reacting to the criticism, Morayo Brown clarified that Shaffy Bello’s comments were misunderstood. According to the TV host, the actress spoke from a place of compassion and understanding rather than support for the lifestyle.
“She was coming from a place of empathy, not judgment,” Morayo explained. “Shaffy Bello was not encouraging anyone to become a call girl. Her message was simply, ‘I understand your situation, but don’t remain there forever.’”
Morayo also revealed that getting Shaffy Bello on the programme was not easy because of the actress’ tight schedule. She said the actress eventually honoured the invitation despite being occupied with other commitments.
The show host further stated that The Morayo Show was created to inspire and entertain viewers, not to promote controversy or drag guests online. She noted that the programme’s mission has always been centered on positivity and meaningful conversations.
Appealing to critics, Morayo urged Nigerians to stop attacking the veteran actress online. She described Shaffy Bello as a respected figure in the entertainment industry and expressed disappointment over the harsh reactions trailing her comments.
“Aunty Shaffy Bello is a national treasure,” she said. “The way people have reacted to her statement is really disheartening.”
